CLOSING OF THE BONES
An healing ceremony for closure and processing of pregnancy & birth
wHAT IS CLOSING OF THE BONES?
The Closing the Bones ceremony is an ancient tradition from Latin America, where the rebozo scarves are used to rock and wrap the body of a mother, to make her feel held, give closure & healing - physically, emotionally & energetically - no matter how long after birth.
In Western societies, new mothers are often left on their own to figure out the sometimes overwhelming task of taking care of their newborn baby, as well as how to accept their new, altered selves.
Our modern, secular world does not fully honour what a woman has gone through in pregnancy and childbirth, and nothing is really done to mark this new era of existence.
There is no rite, ritual, or support in place to recognise, symbolise, or acknowledge the psychological, emotional, societal & spiritual transition that becoming a mother represents.
In more traditional cultures, such rituals are in place, from "closing of bones" in Mexico to "abhyanga" in India, for example. The first 40 days of postpartum are recognised as a crucial time made for healing and bonding with the baby. Close female relatives or other wise women in the community provide this social and symbolic support for new mothers during this vulnerable and sensitive time.
I am grateful I could be held twice during a closing of the bones ceremony. Although they both took place many years after my births, they were a potent way to process my births, heal, and feel supported as a mother.
Closing of the bones is a great gift you can give to yourself or a loved one, and there is no timeline to receive it. Postpartum is forever.
The ceremony is 2 hours and you are welcome, and even encouraged to invite your close friends to assist me.
